SAT Reading & Writing: Pronouns: Subjective vs Objective (Advanced)

31+ practice questions in Praczo

What you need to know

The concept, explained

  • 1

Subjective pronouns do the action: I, he, she, they, we, who.

  • 2

Objective pronouns receive the action (or follow a preposition): me, him, her, them, us, whom.

  • 3

When dealing with compound subjects/objects ("between you and me," or "John and I went"), drop the other person to test which pronoun sounds right.

  • 4

Test "John and I went" by dropping John: "I went" (correct). Test "The boss yelled at John and I" by dropping John: "The boss yelled at I" (incorrect, should be "me").

Common mistakes
  • Always using "John and I" regardless of placement, assuming it sounds more formal.
  • Using subjective pronouns after prepositions (between you and I -> INCORRECT).
